The stark question “Is Art Worth a Life?” generates thought and strong debate. It arises during public talks about the Monuments Men, as well as at speaking venues about the documentary The Rape of Europa. Middle and most high school students, however, are unlikely to bring the emotional maturity and life experiences needed to fully assess the depth of the question. By recasting the question to the idea of sacrifice, younger students can better respond in terms they understand. Through classroom activity and discussion, younger students can be guided toward an appreciation of the original question. Adult learners also can benefit from the scaffolded questions provided in the lesson.
